Rockbreaker Upgrade | Planning Engineer
Rio Tinto upgraded their primary crushers to transition from manual operation to autonomous operation, allowing the rockbreakers to be operated from the Perth office. The works involved in this project include changing the rockbreakers, installing CCTV around the rockbreakers, and installing the HPU and tool rest.
Role
Our role was to develop a shutdown works schedule to provide daily updates throughout the shutdown period. We transitioned schedule updates from Primavera to Microsoft Project on request to work exclusively within Microsoft Project. To help the site supervisors deliver the upgrade works, we developed and tracked the schedule performance providing a daily and weekly schedule report and S-curve for the overall project, including online works, shutdown works, and post-shutdown works.
Outcomes
Throughout the execution of shutdown works, several issues arose, resulting in many scheduled tasks not being completed as planned. Taking this as a challenge, we conducted multiple discussions with the project manager and supervisors. As a result, we successfully reallocated some shutdown jobs to the post-shutdown phase. We produced lookahead schedules for the supervisors to review, enabling discussions regarding tasks that were falling behind schedule as well as those successfully completed according to plan.
